Lexington Kentucky
One can’t talk about Fayette County, Kentucky without talking about Lexington, Kentucky. To some, Lexington is simply the county seat of Fayette, but it is actually more complex than that. In 1974, the City of Lexington’s government (before then, Lexington was simply a municipality) was merged with the government of the County of Fayette, which had turned the two into what is called a consolidated city-county.
A consolidated city-county is essentially a merged county and city who, at the point of unification, will become responsible for a singular, unified territory of jurisdiction; in other words, the government of the city and the government of the county are one and the same. Lexington, Kentucky and its merging with Fayette County cannot, however, be considered as the birth of an independent city as it is still considered part of the State of Kentucky (independent cities don’t fall under the powers of any state).
Apart from this, Lexington Kentucky is also known as “The Horse Capital of the World” especially now that it has been chosen to be the venue for the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games. This is not surprising, as it is home to the Kentucky Horse Park Keeneland race course and the Red Mile race course. Evidently, Lexington Kentucky is devoted to the equines, although it hosts many other events (sports or otherwise).
